Autechre’s 73-minute electronic double album Tri Repetae is the culminatory opus of the mainly British post-techno movement which began with the release of the 1992 Warp Records compilation Artificial Intelligence. Labelled by some as IDM (“intelligent dance music”), this mass of new electronica often
veered towards ambience, a pitfall avoided by Tri Repetae whose ten tracks sustain a mood of foreboding and alienation throughout. Autechre’s album remains one of the defining works of its kind, released just before the period when most electronic musicians – with a few notable exceptions such as Panasonic – were content to serve up either sterile new age tedium or twee beats for robot housewives.
