Although Obscura was re-recorded in 1997 and only released in 1998, it was essentially written and recorded in its original form between 1993 and 1994, as metal music’s creative cycle reached occlusion point. Originally designated as death metal, Canadian band Gorguts made the decision with Obscura to create an opus which, while rooted in metal, transcended all superficial stylistic limitations. The resulting 61-minute double album remains one of the few defining works of progressive metal, and the metal genre’s final tour-de-force.
