One man’s sonic trash is another’s avant-garde masterpiece – suffice to say that Royal Trux’s double album Twin Infinitives was the first classic experimental rock and roll recording of the 1990s. Against a backdrop of mangled sound which suggests a genetic-level fusion of The Magic Band, John Coltrane and Hawkwind, a boy and a girl scream and holler poetic nonsense from some arcane Dada bible, tearing out pages as they go to fuel the funeral pyre of reality. Probably one track too long – the stark coda D6 tends to dilute the sonic integrity of the whole for those who care about such things – Twin Infinitives remains one of the few essential double albums.
