Only conceivable in the wake of the anti-rock iconoclasm of PiL and the Banshees, Killing Joke created something different by combining political imagery and tropes from anarcho-punk with heavy electro-enhanced beats, chanted hooks and scathing but evocative metal guitar riffs. Now viewable as sowing the seeds of the electro-industrial complex, Killing Joke presents a monstrous vision of underground music as dark, dangerous and devoid of subservience to conventional rock morphology, a trend that would only accelerate as the decade progressed.
