After ditching their original drummer – the only “rock” element in the unit – and recruiting a succession of more adventurous percussionists – culminating with Martin Atkins – Public Image Limited moved to a more textural and progressive sound, enhanced by Levene’s increasing use of electronics and Lydon’s shift from rage to reflection. Second Edition, a 45rpm double album, captures this new music at its zenith, and is the last recording to feature original dub-bass player Jah Wobble. PiL carried on for a while without Wobble but eventually fell apart, leaving just a brand name for Lydon to play with in a series of ever-diminishing exploits.
