Hard rock – also known as cock-rock – reached its apotheosis just seconds before lapsing into terminal irrelevance. Taking the filthiest elements of classic Stones and exaggerating them to a grotesque degree within a framework of American trash culture, Aerosmith – and singer Steven Tyler – emerged as cock-rock incarnate, first on Toys In The Attic and then, to the point of delirium, with Rocks. As adamantine, dazzling and yet intrinsically worthless as the diamonds on its cover, Rocks is immortal rock and roll pornography for the sound of mind but sick at heart.
