Dreadlocks Dread is a vital dub reggae release from Joe Gibbs studio, featuring house-band Skin, Flesh and Bones and legendary toaster Big Youth. Youth’s ecstatic vocal declamations feature on the first six tracks, whilst the remaining five are pure dub explosions. “Marcus Garvey Dread” is a toast set to swathes of Burning Spear’s “Marcus Garvey”, also mixed by Gibbs in 1975. Along with Dr. Alimantado and Tapper Zukie, Big Youth was one of Kingston’s “big three” of the mid-70s, rappers who teamed up with reggae’s most inventive producers to create mind-expanding music with a message of social manners, protest and righteous stricture.
