Released the same month as his former band Roxy Music’s Stranded, Eno’s first post-Roxy project No Pussyfooting – made in collaboration with King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp – is a foundational recording of English electronic music for the pop age. Inspired by Terry Riley’s experiments with tape delay loops, Eno and Fripp constructed two epic tracks of accumulating noise and shimmering guitar figures, sonorous swathes of wordless beauty not quite like anything heard before. Eno would also dabble in song-based music but his true vision always centred around experiments like this, ideas which he later refined in the 30-minute opus “Discreet Music” (1975) and formalized as “ambient music” in 1978.
