After quitting Buffalo Springfield and releasing one fairly uninspiring solo album, Neil Young took a sidestep by fronting Crazy Horse, an LA rock band whose three other members were previously in The Rockets. The result was Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, an album which contained some of the most innovative rock sounds yet recorded, juxtaposing beautiful melodies with passages of ragged, improvised electric guitar interplay. Young then resumed his solo career with two much more mainstream albums – but greater things would soon follow.
