D.R.I. (Dirty Rotten Imbeciles) released one of the key albums of American hardcore as a 22-track, 17-minute 7-inch single. Dirty Rotten presents a reduction in form that would lead to aberrations such as grindcore while sowing seeds of future punk/metal hybrids with its insistence on the electric guitar as weapon of mass destruction. Often designated as “thrash”, this type of metallic punk music was the gateway to a decade of ever more extreme underground sounds.
