Applying a theory of jazz harmolodics learned directly from Ornette Coleman to urban funk, guitarist James Blood Ulmer and his band created one of the most invigorating experimental fusion albums since the early 70s. Close to a true jazz-funk music, Are You Glad To Be In America? also features moments of high-tensile rock guitar from Ulmer. The discordant influence of New York’s No Wave bands is evident, and perhaps confirmed by the title of Ulmer’s next album, No Wave.
