After writing lyrics for Blue Öyster Cult, New York poet Patti Smith teamed up with Lenny Kaye, curator of the influential Nuggets compilation, to form an avant-garde garage band which shook up the world with a combination of Rimbaud-inspired hallucinatory poetry and driving rock and roll not heard since Jim Morrison and The Doors. Horses, the immaculate first articulation of this aesthetic – fittingly produced by John Cale – became an instant classic and further established that the future of rock and roll, from the New York Dolls up, was being minted in New York City – with London just one year behind.
