The summary release of first-phase BÖC, and the nearest hard rock gets to metal in its crystallization of a darkside mythos expressed by complete and uncompromising sensory overload. Secret Treaties is the culmination of the Cult’s deep-dive into rock’s potential to create a self-contained universe which obliterates reality and leads the devoted listener into a clandestine, synaesthetic underworld of the imagination. After this Blue Öyster Cult released a pointless live double LP and then re-emerged with Agents Of Fortune, unveiling a “pop” version of the band which spawned the radio hit “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” whilst marking the end of their creative ascendency.
