ABSOLUTEGO
BORIS
(1996-97)
A1: ABSOLUTEGO (65:34).
B1: DRONEVIL2 (7:50).
CATEGORY: DRONE METAL | DURATION: 73 MINUTES
Seemingly inspired by the slow-droning feedback guitar noise used by Melvins on extended, grinding tracks such as “Boris” from their 1990 Bullhead album, Japan’s Boris took that sound and magnified it to epic extremes on the 65-minute track “Absolutego”, recorded and first released in 1996 – in a slightly shorter 60-minute version – on the group’s own label, Fangs Anal Satan. Evoking a torturous, brain-churning procession through the labyrinths of Hell climaxing in slow death, Absolutego is one of the few essential drone metal albums. The full-length version of “Absolutego” was released in 2001 by Southern Lord on Absolutego (Special Low Frequency Version), accompanied by “Dronevil2”, a bowel-shuddering track recorded in 1997 before Boris constructed their definitive statement of psychedelic metal Amplifier Worship the following year.
